Star pulled up to the restaurant and waited for Valet to come and open our doors. I was nervous about this entire lunch and didn’t want it to happen. Had Vita been smart, she would want to stay as far away from my mother as she could.

My mother was bad news.

As much as I tried to make peace with the fact that me and my mother would never have a close relationship it still haunted me.

Star didn’t realize how lucky she was to have a mother like Giovanna. She loved the hell out of her children and would do whatever she could to protect them. I couldn’t see her being the kind of mother that me and Karter had while growing up.

The valets came over to our doors and opened them. “Welcome back, Ms. Vanducci,” one of the valets greeted Star.

“Thank you.” She grabbed her purse and stepped out the car.

This life was all Star knew. She had been born into wealth and taught how to conduct herself in places like this. Whenever she stepped into a room, she walked like she owned it and as if she belonged here.

Me?

I felt like a fish out of water. I desperately tried to fit in and conduct myself like I belonged here too, but it didn’t come off the same way as Star.

It felt like I didn’t belong here, and the people knew that I didn’t. I watched G get out of her car and swing her purse onto her arm while strutting into the country club. As much as Star continued to tell me that I belonged here.

It was hard believing it.

The staff made a fuss over Giovanna and Star as we were seated. I watched as they hugged and asked about the family before giving us menus. I sat there feeling like the fish out of water I’d just described.

The minute the woman ushered away from our table, Giovanna leaned in and shook her head. “Susie sure knows how to run that mouth of hers.”

“You know she thinks you’re her bestie,” Star chuckled while spreading out the white napkin on her lap. “Did your mother reach back out to you?”

My mother had texted me on the drive over that she was ten minutes away. My palms were sweating thinking about this conversation that was going to happen.

“Should be coming in now.”

Giovanna looked nervous. She knew this sit-down between her and my mother was needed, she was still worried about the outcome. It had been years since the two of them had been in the same room.

Now they were going to be sitting across the table from one another with the two little girls that were only months old the last time they spoke. I worried that my mother would get defensive and make everything about her.

Like the last nineteen years had been.

Everything had been about my mother and the loss of our father. I felt like me or Carter couldn’t go through anything because it was always about her.
